More About Welwitschia Hospital
In 1998 His Excellency, Dr. Sam Nujoma, President of the Republic of Namibia, officially opened the Welwitschia Hospital. The hospital is a 50-bedded Private Hospital, which offers a variety of services and facilities not only to the community of Walvis Bay, but also to the public of the Erongo Region and from further afield.
The Hospital is conveniently situated with attending Private Practitioners and Dentists practicing from adjacent consulting rooms. Resident specialists in several disciplines together with visiting specialists from many other disciplines complement the general practitioners in providing medical services for the majority of needs of the community. Ancillary services such as physiotherapy and a retail pharmacy to name just two, are also available in the complex. Medical Aid administrators close at hand ensure the ease with which patient queries are handled. Ample on site secure parking is also available.
Our caring staff is on hand 24-hours a day with our emergency facility equipped to deal with trauma and seriously ill patients.
The x-ray department has three full time radiographers and a sonographer on duty supported by a part-time radiologist who is responsible not only for diagnostic radiography, but also for computed tomography (CT), a state-of-the-art addition to the services offered at Welwitschia Hospital.
A unique facility at Welwitschia Hospital is the Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber. Most people associate the chamber with the treatment of deep-sea divers suffering from “the bends” where oxygen under pressure is painlessly forced into the blood stream. Suitable patients may be treated in a similar fashion for injuries such as burns and trauma.
Our General Ward also has a High Care facility where both medical and surgical patients are cared for by our trained Nursing Staff. Dietary requirements for patients with conditions such as diabetes are catered for and traditional food is provided to ensure the well being of people of all cultures.
Our Maternity Department offers another first for Namibia – the Natural Birth Unit where mothers are able to give birth in a warm, homely environment with the least amount of intervention. Caring maternity staff is always close at hand monitoring both mother and baby, making the happy event as stress free as possible.
Our staff continuously strives to live up to our motto of “Quality Care by People who Care” and with the expansion of Walvis Bay, we hope to carry this caring forward to encompass a greater section of the community.
